Patrick Dorgu, a defender for Manchester United, acknowledged that the club’s decision to cut ties with Rasmus Hojlund this summer took him by surprise.
On the day of the deadline, the Red Devils approved Hojlund’s loan transfer to Napoli. The Serie A team has the option to pay £38 million, which, in some circumstances, will become required.
Dorgu discussed a variety of topics in an exclusive interview with Ekstra Bladet (page 58). One of those has to do with fellow countrymen Christian Eriksen and Hojlund leaving United.
As Eriksen’s contract expired in the summer, the left wing-back claimed that everyone anticipated what would happen, but that Hojlund’s need to move on was possibly a “bigger shock.”
He said: “That’s how it is in football. You never know when it’s your turn to move on. We knew it would happen to Christian, but it was perhaps a bigger shock that Rasmus had to move on.
“I talked to him a lot during the process and could sense which way it was going. Hopefully, we will now see each other every time on the national team.”
Hojlund’s first season with the Red Devils was successful. Despite his consistency issues, he managed to score 16 goals, 10 of which came in the Premier League.
With just four league goals in the 2024–2025 season, he had a disappointing season despite expectations that his numbers would improve.
This made a change possible up front. Benjamin Sesko, who the Red Devils spent a lot of money on, is expected to establish himself as a clear starter in the upcoming months.
Hojlund knew exactly what was going on. The Dane decided to join Napoli because he needed playing time to grow, and they have given him assurances about his future.
The Serie A champions are most likely to sign him permanently next summer. United will be hoping for the same to receive a financial boost for future spending.
