A Manchester United star could now “reconsider” his future amid interest from Saudi Arabia, a journalist has revealed.
Man Utd star could change his stance on leaving
Ruben Amorim seems to be facing significant pressure following Manchester United’s disappointing start to the Premier League season, with Wayne Rooney indicating that the manager has not managed to implement any improvements since Erik ten Hag’s departure.
Rooney remarked: “I aim to be as supportive and positive as possible. However, it is quite challenging to assert that we are witnessing progress. We are not seeing any of that, which makes it very difficult. I believe if the manager is truthful with himself, the situation has deteriorated.”
Compounding the issues in midfield, Kobbie Mainoo is seeking a transfer during the January window after losing his place in the lineup under Amorim, having most recently appeared only as a second-half substitute against Manchester City.
Instead, Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes were selected for central midfield roles, with the Portugal international playing slightly deeper than his preferred position, as Amorim remains steadfast in employing a 3-4-1-2 formation.
There were indications that Fernandes might have departed during the summer transfer window due to interest from the Saudi Pro League, and there is now a fresh update regarding the Portugal international’s future at Old Trafford.
Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke stated: “I fully anticipate that the Saudi interest will persist. It has not truly dissipated. Discussions were held with his agent and other parties, but Fernandes opted to remain at Manchester United.
“He is currently content at United, but I believe much will hinge on Manchester United’s performance this season. Should they face another challenging campaign in the Premier League and beyond, Fernandes may reassess his situation at the season’s conclusion and consider a move.”
Man Utd letting Fernandes leave would be major gamble
Very few Man United signings in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era have worked out, but the 31-year-old is one of the only exceptions, recording 38 goal contributions in all competitions over the course of the 2024-25 campaign.
| Competition | Appearances | Goal contributions |
| Premier League | 36 | 19 |
| FA Cup | 3 | 3 |
| EFL Cup | 3 | 4 |
| Community Shield | 1 | 1 |
| Europa League | 14 | 11 |
That said, there are doubts over whether the £300k-a-week Portugal international fits into Amorim’s system, with Paul Scholes saying: “He is the most creative player on the team, he should be playing as the No 10, there is no doubt about that. But he is being asked to do something different.”
Consequently, if Amorim remains at Old Trafford, it may be best for all parties if Fernandes moves on, but it would be a huge gamble, and the 40-year-old will need to improve results soon, with United collecting just four points from their opening four games.
