Alejandro Garnacho has been called out by rival fans for supposedly “lying” in his first ever interview at Chelsea.
After being shut out at Manchester United by head coach Ruben Amorim, 21-year-old Garnacho has finally found a home at Stamford Bridge.
Having been left out of United’s squad for their preseason tour of the United States, the Argentina international was exiled to the so-called ‘Bomb Squad’ along with players like Jadon Sancho and Antony.
Chelsea signed Garnacho on Saturday for £40 million, which includes a 10% sell-on clause for United, after being linked to the winger in January.
Garnacho was present at Chelsea’s 2-0 victory against local rivals Fulham, although he faced the risk of upsetting his new team minutes into his debut at Stamford Bridge when he was seen looking through his phone before the game.
Chelsea released Garnacho’s first interview at the club on Sunday morning, during which he said it was an “incredible feeling” to sign for the Blues.
“I think it’s a bigger step,” said Garnacho.
“The situation of the club, it’s a good step for me and my career and hopefully it’s going to go well for me.”
While that comment could be viewed as a subtle dig at United, it was another statement made by Garnacho that caught the eye of rival supporters.
Later in the interview, Garnacho claimed to support Chelsea “a bit” as a youngster because of Eden Hazard.
“I used to watch the Premier League when I was young,” said Garnacho, alongside images of him wearing Chelsea’s kit when he was younger.
“Obviously Chelsea because I like Eden Hazard. That’s why I support Chelsea, a bit.”
Rival fans were quick to mock Garnacho’s claim that he supported the Blues.
“A bit? You liar,” posted one fan on X.
Another added: “Obviously he’s reading a script.”
A third wrote: “Support Chelsea a bit? He’s taking the p***.”
While a Chelsea fan joked: “Lol everyone is a fan when we sign them.”
With Enzo Maresca’s team playing Brentford on September 13, Garnacho will be looking to start strongly at Chelsea and may have the chance to make an impression in another west London derby.
After that, on September 17, they will play Bayern Munich, who were also linked to Garnacho this summer, in the Champions League. On September 20, they will play his old team, United, at Old Trafford.
