Newcastle United and Sweden sharpshooter Alexander Isak is currently training with former club Real Sociedad – and he’s responded to interest from Manchester United after his prospective summer move to Liverpool fell through.
Isak, widely regarded as one of the best strikers in world football, is all the rage – he’s rangy, a brilliant finisher and a dribbling genius. It’s no wonder that Arne Slot’s Premier League-winning Reds are interested in securing his signature this summer.
Key Statistic: Only Erling Haaland (49) and Mo Salah (47) have scored more Premier League goals since the start of last season than Alexander Isak (44).
That said, the 25-year-old will not be moving to Anfield after Liverpool as the club have no plans to bid again this window. The Merseysiders’ opening proposal – north of £100 million – was rejected by the Magpies, who are holding out for £150m.
Another club who are looking to recruit a new striker this summer are Manchester United. Ruben Amorim was appointed following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag in the latter stages of 2024 – and his side finished the 2024/25 campaign with the fifth-lowest number of goals scored. For reference, they scored just 44.
The Red Devils – who currently have Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee as rotating options in the centre-forward berth – are keen admirers of Benjamin Sesko and striking a deal for the 22-year-old, according to reports, is not ‘within sight’.
However, Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has reported that Manchester United, too, have shown an interest in the aforementioned Isak. The Swede has no interest in joining the Red Devils, however, and taking to X (formerly Twitter) following news that Liverpool’s first offer was rebutted, Plettenberg wrote:
“Understand Alexander Isak has once again made it clear that he only wants to join Liverpool FC. Even Manchester United made an enquiry in recent days, but Isak turned it down. He only wants LFC.”
“The player’s camp remain optimistic that an agreement can be reached this transfer window, after a £120m bid was rejected by NUFC,” Plettenberg continued before adding, “Isak’s agreement with LFC until 2031 is 100% done.”
