Conflicting reports have emerged surrounding Ruben Amorim‘s future at Manchester United following the Red Devils’ latest embarrassing result in the Premier League.
Man United is assured of concluding the season with their lowest points total in the competition’s history, having suffered their 17th defeat of the Premier League season during a 2-0 home loss to West Ham United on Sunday.
Amorim has now managed a seven-match winless streak in the English top tier, resulting in the 20-time champions falling to a disappointing 16th position in the Premier League standings.
The maximum points Man United can achieve this season is 45, and Amorim has recently indicated that he may resign if the club’s circumstances do not improve by the 2025-26 season.
Nevertheless, the Red Devils still have the opportunity to conclude a tumultuous campaign on a positive note, as a victory against Tottenham Hotspur in next Wednesday’s Europa League final would secure their place in the Champions League.
Man United ‘to review’ Amorim’s position in summer
Despite the possibility of Manchester United triumphing in the continent’s secondary tournament, The Mirror reports that the executives at Old Trafford, including Sir Jim Ratcliffe, will reassess Amorim’s role during the summer.
Ratcliffe, along with chief executive Omar Berrada and other board members, is anticipated to evaluate the performance of the 40-year-old manager, who has recorded 16 victories, eight draws, and 15 losses in his first 39 matches.
The article indicates that Amorim may have inadvertently placed himself at odds with the club’s leadership due to his candid remarks following the defeat to West Ham, potentially jeopardizing his previously positive rapport with Ratcliffe.
While the Manchester United management considers the absence of European competition unacceptable given the club’s financial circumstances, Amorim and his staff reportedly believe that a season without international fixtures could yield significant domestic advantages.
A notable example is Arsenal, which failed to secure any European competition for the 2021-22 season, narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification that year, yet subsequently contended for the title in the following two seasons.
Man United ‘will not review’ Amorim’s position in summer
Conversely, a distinct report from talkSPORT indicates that the executives at Old Trafford currently have no ‘immediate plans’ to conduct an internal review regarding Amorim’s role at the Theatre of Dreams.
The former Sporting Lisbon manager remains under contract with the club for an additional two years, and unless he chooses to resign, any termination would necessitate Manchester United to provide a severance package.
The Red Devils have already expended a total of £14.5 million to part ways with Amorim’s predecessor, Erik ten Hag, along with members of his coaching staff and former sporting director Dan Ashworth.
Simultaneously, Ratcliffe has implemented several cost-reduction strategies impacting the club’s personnel, initially overseeing 250 redundancies, with plans to eliminate an additional 200 jobs earlier this year.
