Now, with Wolves well clear of the bottom three and planning for next season, Cunha’s future is now a hot topic once again.
It would currently seem as if Manchester United are leading the race for Cunha this summer, even if clubs like Arsenal can’t be entirely discounted.
Cunha has a £63m release clause and he’s a player who new Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta knows very well from Atletico Madrid.
In fact, Berta has already recommended Cunha to Arsenal since his arrival this summer.
Arsenal might prefer Bryan Mbeumo over Matheus Cunha
That being said, Give Me Sport are now reporting that Arsenal do have concerns about Cunha’s data, something which might stifle a move this summer.
As explained, Arsenal have been weighing up a move for Cunha this summer, a versatile forward who could excel on the left or centrally.
However, there is said to be ‘hesitation’ behind the scenes at Arsenal about whether Cunha can sustain his current level of performance at a top club.
The Gunners have been impressed by the striker’s ability to out perform his xG this season, but that in turn has also caused concern.
And in addition to those reservations, Arsenal also want to avoid any bidding wars this summer for their top targets — Berta won’t be paying over the odds to win any race.
Interestingly, the report also details that Bryan Mbeumo is currently seen as a more attractive option for the Gunners owing to his consistent data, even if Arsenal don’t seem to be on the cusp of a move for the Brentford star.
Mikel Arteta should still take a risk
Data aside, the eye test would conclude that Cunha could be an excellent signing for Arsenal.
There are doubts — Arsenal are concerned about Cunha’s recent behaviour on the pitch too following a recent red card against Bournemouth.
However, if Mikel Arteta’s side are lacking a bit of x-factor up top, Cunha’s unpredictability and maverick-like qualities could be invaluable.
Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard have both enjoyed their fair share of success on the left recently, but neither have nailed down the role.
And especially if he was signed alongside a new number nine, Cunha could improve Arteta’s options immensely.
