Crook was discussing Everton on talkSPORT [9 June, 08:40] and said the club would likely prefer to move Onana on rather than England trio Jordan Pickford, Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The Belgian midfielder has been the subject of widespread interest early on this summer, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Barcelona credited with an admiration for the player.
Crook said: “Probably, out of the players mentioned, Everton are most likely to sacrifice [Onana] and would much prefer to sell.”
Amadou Onana looks set to leave Everton
At 22 and with an increasing importance to the modern elite game with his deep-lying midfield attributes, it comes as no surprise that Onana is garnering significant interest.
The profile of the 6’4” Belgium man fits the bill of the playing style of many elite European clubs, with Arsenal perhaps most heavily linked with a bid of £45million touted – though Everton will fancy their chances of recouping a higher sum.
Onana is open to leaving Goodison Park in search of Champions League football, and could use the Euro 2024 exposure to put himself in the shop window; of course, the Blues will be hoping for the sake of their own bank balance that he and Belgium enjoy a successful tournament in Germany.
Amadou Onana may be the man Everton sacrifice this month for vital funds
It’s understandable that Everton feel Pickford, Branthwaite and Calvert-Lewin are more valuable assets to Sean Dyche’s squad – Branthwaite in particular will be one to wrap in cotton wool amid increasing interest from Manchester United – but the Toffees must budge somewhere in order to toe the PSR line by 30 June.
Everton have already been linked with a host of potential replacements for Onana, including Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips, but it remains to be seen what activity could be agreed upon before the official window opening on 14 June.
