‘The freshest thing’: David Ornstein shares what he now hears about Ivan Toney and Arsenal

The January transfer window has only been open for a day, but it already feels as though a transfer saga is developing with Ivan Toney and Arsenal.

The Brentford striker has been linked to the Gunners for months at this point, and as he edges closer to a return from his ban, a potential move to the Emirates begins to make more and more headlines.

Speaking on Five, David Ornstein has been discussing Toney, and, unfortunately, he doesn’t bring good news for Arsenal fans.

Indeed, Ornstein says that he doesn’t see Toney joining Arsenal in January, claiming that Brentford’s recent struggles along with injuries to Bryan Mbeumo and Yoann Wissa may well lead to the Bees deciding to keep hold of the striker.

Brentford could keep Toney
Ornstein shared what he knows about Toney.

“Ivan Toney is admired by some inside Arsenal, but that doesn’t translate into a transfer. The first thing we should say and the freshest thing we should say is that Brentford are struggling, they’ve lost five matches in a row, Bryan Mbeumo is injured, he’s had surgery, Yoann Wissa is going to AFCON. They need Toney now more than ever, I see them re-integrating him. Let’s see how he does, if he starts to fly clubs could start to panic and a late reactive move to test Brentford’s resolve, but I think it’s more likely that he stays in January, maybe he could leave in the summer and don’t discount him leaving on a free in 2025,” Ornstein said.

“In terms of Arsenal, when they have money and are in a position to spend, their money will have to go on David Raya, £20m+ to convert that to be a permanent deal. Brentford would expect around £100m to come in for Ivan Toney, and is that going to be Arsenal in January? At the moment I can’t see it at all.”

Fair enough
We really wouldn’t blame Brentford for keeping hold of Toney.

MORE ARSENAL STORIES
The striker is their most important player right now, and with a potential relegation battle staring them in the face, they need him to start scoring goals.

Yes, selling him while his value is at its highest makes good business sense, but Premier League survival is still worth way more than whatever transfer fee they’d receive for Toney.

As Ornstein says, things could change as panic sets in, but, for the moment, this move to Arsenal doesn’t sound all that likely.
