Manchester United is on the verge of qualifying for Champions League football next season, despite experiencing their most challenging campaign in the Premier League era. Ruben Amorim’s team has reached the Europa League final, where they will face their domestic rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.
This all-English final will result in six Premier League teams participating in the Champions League next season, as the top five teams also secure their places in the tournament. With 36 teams entering the competition, one-sixth will consist of Premier League clubs.
United is gearing up for a squad transformation this summer, as Amorim will need to offload some players to generate funds for new signings. In the absence of European football, the Red Devils can afford to bring in one or two new players without making sales.
However, selling certain players will enhance Amorim’s transfer budget, allowing him to pursue players who align with his tactical approach, as United seeks to move past a disappointing domestic season. As the Red Devils prepare for this overhaul, we examine 10 United players likely to depart this summer.
Seven deals expiring with no new contract offers coming
Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen, and Jonny Evans are poised to depart from Manchester United this summer as their contracts conclude. Eriksen has indicated his intention to seek new opportunities, having not received a renewal offer from the club. At 37 years old, Evans will not be granted a new contract.
Although United exercised a 12-month extension on Lindelof’s contract last season, there is no similar option available this year, making him another player likely to exit. Tom Heaton, who was previously expected to leave, is now anticipated to receive a new contract.
Additionally, Manchester World reported that young players Sam Murray, Jack Kingdon, and James Nolan are also set to leave upon the expiration of their contracts at the end of the season. Despite their regular appearances for the Under-21 team, they are not considered to meet the standards required for the first team and will not be offered new contracts as they seek to advance their careers elsewhere.
Loan quartet not wanted by Ruben Amorim – summer exits on the cards
Manchester United currently has four players on loan who are expected to be transferred again during the summer. Marcus Rashford, Tyrell Malacia, and Antony departed from the club in January, and it is believed that none of them have a future under Amorim.
This is despite Rashford and Antony experiencing a significant improvement in performance at Aston Villa and Real Betis, respectively. Real Betis is eager to retain Antony, who has been instrumental in their advancement to the Europa Conference League final. Manchester United needs to sell him for approximately £32.5 million to prevent a loss in profit and sustainability.
Aston Villa holds a £40 million option to purchase Rashford, but it remains uncertain whether they can afford the transfer without Champions League participation. Malacia has not made a strong impression at PSV Eindhoven and is expected to return to Old Trafford before being transferred again this summer.
Additionally, Chelsea has a commitment to acquire Jadon Sancho for a fee between £20 million and £25 million. Should they choose to decline this option, they will be required to pay Manchester United £5 million in compensation. If Sancho returns to Old Trafford, the Red Devils will seek to transfer him again during the summer.
